The developers were also able to recover some funds in the process.
Hackers attacked, but the Cardano team repelled the attack!
As you have been following on Kriptokoin.com, hacking attacks are not uncommon in the crypto world. This time, the leading altcoin project Cardano was the target of the attackers. Cardano faced a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack targeting its staked ADA tokens on Tuesday. The altcoin project, however, mounted a successful defense against this attack. Moreover, the network remained fully operational despite the attack. The DDoS attack was aimed at flooding the blockchain with spam transactions in order to disrupt its services. However, a quick response from Cardano developers mitigated the threat.
As highlighted by Fluid Token chief technology officer ElRaulito_cnft, the attacker launched the attack on block 10,487,530, executing 194 smart contracts per transaction and spending 0.9 ADA each. The strategy was to flood the blocks with a large number of transactions, thus overwhelming the network.
Philip Disarro, founder of Cardano development firm Anastasia, identified the problem immediately. He effectively stopped the attack by deregistering the staking credential used by the attacker.
Altcoin team managed to recover some stolen funds!
In addition to blocking the attack, the developers managed to recover some funds from the attacker. As a result, the robustness of the network was proven as it continued to function without any interruptions. The fact that the Cardano Blockchain was able to withstand such an attack underlines the efficiency of the security measures and the development team. DDoS attacks are popular attacks that aim to cause service disruption by flooding a targeted website with spam traffic. However, Cardano’s team’s response ensured that the network was not affected.
Strengthening the Cardano Blockchain
Philip Disarro claimed that there were other ways to stop the attack, but that his method was the fastest. “If you rush something into production without thorough testing and a high-quality, independent audit, you can lose a lot of money due to vulnerabilities, just like the attacker did,” he added.
Intersect, a member-based organization for the Cardano ecosystem, later confirmed the attack. It also thanked the developer community for a quick resolution to the DDoS attack. While the Cardano network was not compromised and performed normally, Intersect said, “The network experienced a higher than normal load. Additionally, some stake pool operators (SPOs) were negatively impacted due to the intensification in block height battles,” Intersect said in a statement. Meanwhile, the Intersect task force is collaborating to identify and test a solution to further mitigate the impact of such spam attacks.
